Unrequited Love Poem

She was over him

She told that to herself time and again

Her self-respect demanded it

She was far from a hopeless romantic type

She was a realist; a grown, strong woman

She promised herself she will act like one

But the day she ran into him, her will cracked a little

Ah, there was the face she had fallen for

Her hurt ached, reminding of what could have been

She squirmed away from him, a poor excuse already out of her lips

She avoided him that day and the next

She hated herself for that

She hated the hurt that had resurfaced, making her eye blur with tears

She saw him again a few days later

In the cafeteria of all the places.

Seated opposite to him, was a girl

The sight almost made her spill the coffee

Who was she?

What did it matter? The voice in her head could be heard, rather feebly

Because

Because it is all the more real now

The last of her hope was extinguished

They could never be

What a nasty play of hands!

Loving someone she couldn’t have

She wasn’t sure how she felt about this story

But she had to move on

Why? Her self-respect demanded it

Her heart, her poor heart needed it

She grasped at a new hope as she walked out of the cafeteria

Time. Time will heal her wound.
